Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy as a novel tool for crystallographic analysis in cellulose: the potentiality of being a new standard for evaluating crystallinity

Given that terahertz (THz) radiation responds to intermolecular forces such as hydrogen bonds, THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) has expanded possibilities in cellulose research. In this study, THz-TDS was used investigate the crystallinity of three types cellulose-based materials. Microcrystalline (MCC) and wood were ball milled at different times, pseudo-wood a mixture MCC lignin mass fractions. All samples showed peaks 3.04 absorption coefficient spectra. Further, spectra from 2.79 3.32 cut out detrended by subtraction baseline. The integrated intensity correlation with fraction samples, milling time samples. similar index calculated X-ray powder diffraction. Moreover, original sample without had an about 30% sample, matching concentration (about 40%). We normalized into 1 0 min–max algorithm proposed new “index” for evaluating crystallinity.
